Okay, we've all heard about the theories that Dumbledore is not dead, blah, blah, blah. But, here is my theory about what Dumbledore was doing in the 6th book.
When we first see Dumbledore in HBP he is acting a little odd, wearing all black, (when he has always worn colours) and he has the blackened hand with the ring.
Now, the only other professor in the school who wears all black is Severus Snape. Minor detail you might say, but let's look at what Snape says in PS.
"I can teach you brew fame, bottle glory, and even put a stopper in death."
So, I think you can get where I am going with this. Snape has somehow managed to hold of Dumbledore's death, long enough for Dumbledore to let Harry learn about Tom Riddle and go to the cave, (which he knew did not contain a horcrux) and get the locket which was a clue on how to get the horcrux. Snape then kills Dumbledore, (for he had no choice anyway) and then Dumbledore dies and Harry is left to search for the horcruxes.
Make sense? I think it does, but I would like to see what you think on it.

I concur, completely. I'm not sure if I've posted a fiction on my opinions on this, but I think I've gone through the whole thing so many times.... I really don't feel like explaining it all again, but the gist is:
Severus is self serving and he thought that it was best to allow Dumbledore to live as long as he did, then when the Dark Lord became suspicious, the best alternative route was to kill the Headmaster if Draco could not do it, since he had made that promise to Narcissa in front of Bellatrix in the beginning of the sixth book. (Oh, do I love that book!)

Well, I for one strongly believe that yes, Dumbledore is dead. Even if Snape didn't have the hate to use Avada Kedavra or whatever they say, let us not forget that he fell off of the top of a tower. People just don't survive that, powerful wizard or no.
I'm not sure, however, what I think of Snape postpoing said death. It's one thing to say Dumbledore knew he was going to die, but another to say he was already have supposed to. And another thing, what do you mean he knew it didn't have a Horcrux? Where is there proof of this?
Also, Raye, you are crazy to think Snape is out for himself. Killing Dumbledore and the side affects of it defintely disprove that theory. Also, he had to keep that "promise" no matter what, even if it hadn't been Bellatrix; an Unbreakable Vow is just that...unbreakable.

Well, the horcrux part is just my speculating because I always found it odd that Dumbledore knew he needed Harry in the cave, and that he knew where the boat was etc.

i think that he had been out there before to check about the horcrux being there, but realizing that he couldnt get to the locket without drinking the stuff and knowing that would weaken/kill him, he chose to take harry with him to make sure the job could get done.

he also takes him to ensure that he keeps Harry in the light and active, so that he doesn't end up feeling the need to do something rash like he has in the past, and making up for doing that to Sirius. it gives him the experience and understanding that he would only get from being there...
and anyway, we will be finding everything out TOMORROW. i know we aren't meant to use capitals, but i think they are necessary there.
