Severus barely managed to tuck his head in quickly enough not to crack it open on the hard floor, and rolled into a sitting position, wand raised and ready in Sirius's direction.
Didn't that that sorry excuse for a wizard know any other sort of attack? It had been over three years since Potter's pathetic gaggle had found out about levicorpus and he was starting to wonder if that was the only jinx they had managed to master.
A second's observation showed Snaped that something was wrong with the scene in front of him. Sirius wasn't standing where he was supposed to be, snickering with Potter at his "oh, so clever" trick. In fact, he was halfway down the hall.
The first thought that floated through Severus's mind was that not Sirius was out of jinxing range, which might have been a good thing because Severus might have just been angry enough to slice his chest open with a flick of his wand, and that would not have been useful to the Dark Lord, as he would have ended up in prison. The second was that someone must have been defending him by sending the Gryffindor flying backward. He frowned and peered about for his supporter.

"Sirius, NO!" Remus shouted, half standing now as well. With an angry flick of his wand, he sent Sirius flying. Let Sirius get angry at him later; for now, anything he had to do to keep Sirius from antagonizing Snape, he would. Had Sirius forgotten that, thanks to his anger last year, Snape now knew Remus' secret? He may have been sworn to secrecy by Dumbledore, but it would only take Snape getting mad enough and the secret would come out.
Remus remembered that if Sirius did not.
"Mr. Black!" came an outraged shout, and, to Remus' great relief, Professor McGonagall was striding toward them. "Dueling? And term not even started? Come with me, now! You, too, Mr. Snape!"
Sighing and shaking at his uncharacteristic outburst, Remus sank back into his seat, trying to avoid everyone's stares, but especially that of Severus Snape.

Peter watched the whole exchange, slightly hidden behind the others. He couldn't deny that he didn't enjoy seeing Snape being bullied, but Sirius was getting a little too rash. With all his shouting of Death Eaters it could be possible that they would try and hurt them just in spite. If Peter was ever found without James to protect him, he knew he wouldn't last..
"What do you think will happen to them?" Peter asked the others around him, watching as Remus and Snape were led off by McGonagall.

Saved by... the werewolf? Snape realized that Remus Lupin, wand still raised, must have been the one to force back Sirius. A pathetic attempt to stay on his good side, perhaps?
If he wanted to do that then he should stop tagging along after Black and Potter.
Standing slowly, Severus returned his attention to Lily and snapped, "I'd find a better group of friends soon if I were you, Evans. This lot are going to get themselves killed fast out in the real world."
Then he flashed a quick glare at Pettigrew for good measure, and followed Professor McGonagall down the hall.

He heard Peter's question, in some part of his head, but it was a moment before he really could put the words together in a way that made sense.
"I don't know," he finally mumbled. "Can we talk about it later?" he asked firmly through clenched teeth. He didn't really want to talk about what had just happened, but he really didn't want to talk about it here.
He chanced a glance toward Lily, then quickly looked away. She was still looking at him curiously.

Sirius was furious. How DARE Remus throw him back like that! Remus had never EVER crossed him like that before. Humiliating him infront of Snape like that. Sirius would have his arse for it later, that he would.
Sirius wasn't sure what McGonagall had planned for him and Snape, but he was sure it would be some sort of detention with Filch scrubbing toilets with a toothbrush. This would only give him more time to figure out how to expose Snape for his Death Eating ways. He'd get Snape to show that Mark to Lily, just to prove to her that it was true, if it was the last thing he ever did.

Peter jumped slightly as he noticed Sirius's less-than-pleasant expression. "Um, maybe we should get to our common room now?" Peter asked tentatively. He wasn't sure where James and Lily had gone off to, but they were supposed to be getting to bed now that the Feast was over.

Severus gritted his teeth as he followed McGonagall into her study. An hour back at school and he had already been late, humiliated, and was now going to be sentenced to detention for a fight he hadn't even started. Or gotten a chance to finish. Yes, hexing Sirius Black would have been worth a detention, but somehow the werewolf had beaten him to the punch. Well, actually, that was a bit amusing... Remus Lupin attacking Sirius Black on Severus's behalf... he smirked.
Then the smile faded. He was sure that his Head of House would also want to punish him in some way for missing the train.
Two detentions on his first day...
He could only hope that he was sentenced to a punishment far away from Black.

Two weeks worth of detentions with Filch, just as Sirius had expected. Please Merlin, Sirius thought, don't let Snape and I get detention together!
Sirius returned to his common room in a right fowl mood, hoping, just hoping that Remus would still be awake so that he could give him a good thrashing.

"Severus!" Regulus called, chasing after his close friend. "What happened? I could barely see what they did, although I did see some spells going off.... Don't tell me that that bastard, Sir-- Augh, whatever his name is, now! -- hurt you, did he?" Rage boiled in him hotly as his temper mounted, much like his brothers did often (something they both inherited from their mother, if Sirius even considered her his mother anymore). His fists were clenched, his fingers gripping the sleeves of his Slytherin robes.

Severus stalked through the common room, right hand white as it clenched compulsively around the wand in his pocket.
Two weeks of detentions. Two weeks, and for what? He hadn't started the brawl, he hadn't used a single jinx, and he could feasibly argue that he had only drawn his wand in self-defense. Any other teacher would have seen reason, but McGonagall was so stuck on favoring her hot-headed Gryffindors that she had insisted that Severus serve just as much time in detention as Black.
He slowed to a stop as Regulus approached, and swiveled to glare at the younger student, stepping in close so that his words would not be heard by the rest of the Slytherins lounging about the Common Room.
"This day was supposed to mark my triumphant return to Hogwarts as a hand of the Dark Lord. I was not supposed to be humiliated in the middle of a hallway in front of-" he cut himself off before he spoke Lily's name, quickly substituting it with "half of the school, by that idiot Muggle-lover with whom you share blood."

"I no longer count him as part of my family!" Regulus snarled, eyes ablaze in resentment of his brother -- that made it final, he would no longer consider Sirius as anyone he wished to acknowledge. After all, that bastard was a Blood Traitor, anyway! "You," he pointed to Severus, emphasizing his direction, "are more family to me than he will ever be anymore."

The conviction in Regulus's voice calmed Severus with surprising suddenness. After all, he was far more used to people who were his family wishing they weren't than someone who wasn't family suggesting that he wanted to be. The Blacks had been very good to Severus in the past months, as had, of course, the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters.
"I know," he replied, reaching out with his left hand to pat Regulus on the shoulder. "I know that he's as much a thorn in your side as he is mine. Don't worry, though. One day we'll get payback for all that he's done to disgrace me and your family."

"Thank you, Severus..." he whispered, tugging slightly at the sleeve of the other's robe, blue eyes meeting black, looking away quickly, shamed to think Severus would think of even considering let Regulus hugs him, even if it was just a more re-assurance thing to him....

Sirius stormed into the common room, eyes wild with rage. "MOONY!" Sirius shouted, not caring that everyone was looking at him as if he were mad. "Come out here you coward!" Sirius hadn't been this angry for quite some time. Humiliated by his own best friend. How could he? Over SNAPE?! Sirius knew Remus was worried Snape would rat on him about being a werewolf, but Sirius also knew Snape wouldn't dare in fear of whatever punishment the headmaster could dish out. Remus was always worrying for nothing, and this time he'd gone too far!
