Remus heard Sirius bellow -- really, who could have missed it? -- and sighed. He froze over his trunk for a moment, considering his options. He could go down to the Common Room and try and talk sense into Sirius and have that fail and result in an open confrontation in front of everyone, or he could stay up here and wait for Sirius to come find him.
In the end, he turned back to his trunk. Sirius would be that much angrier, sure, but they would avoid any further humiliation. Remus set his jaw wryly. Sirius may have the reputation, but Remus had always been just a hair more powerful, and Sirius was angry. Sirius hadn't yet learned that anger only helped his opponent in a duel.
Muttering the incantation to put a strong shield around the door, Remus went back to unpacking, and waited.

Lily heard Sirius enter the Common Room as she sat staring into the fire. "Stupid self-absorbed boys," she mumbled under her breath, she felt sorry for Remus, he'd now have to deal with Sirius, never a pleasant experience. "Black, leave him the hell alone," she croaked out, rubbing her red eyes, trying to get rid of an evidence of crying. "He saved your stupid backside from getting expelled," she said slowly. He most likely didn't enter hear her over the crowds of Gryffindors in the common room. And at this point, she didn't care.

But Sirius did hear her, and that was his breaking point. Sirius had had enough, and Evans just pushed right over the edge of his temper. "You know what I think Evans," Sirius said, his voice low and dangerous. The room of students parted as he walked toward her where she sat by the fireplace, ready to see another fight. "I think that you are a stuck up, winey, stupid, little naieve brat who doesn't know a thing about real life. Your life revolves around lessons and rules; you have no idea about real life. You go around defending people like Snape, who turn innocent little children like my brother into Death Eaters, because you think there is still good in them. One of these days, I can't wait to see your face when you find out just who Severus Snape is." And with that, Sirius walked away from a red eyed Lily and strode up to the boys dormitory, in search for Remus Lupin.

Remus was still calmly unpacking his trunk when he heard the angry footsteps in the tower outside that could only herald Sirius' arrival.
Swallowing hard, he tried to push down the uneasy feeling that he wasn't going to like doing what he had to do in the next few minutes, but he had cursed Sirius Black once tonight; if worse came to worse, he would do it again.
He paused only to make sure his Shield Charm around the door held and was ready to snap closed the moment someone crossed the threshold, essentially trapping that person in a bubble. Then he resumed his work, taking care to remain the appearance of a calm he didn't actually feel.

Sirius pushed open the room to the boys dormitory and found himself trapped by a Shield Charm undoubtebly put up by Remus. "Coward," Sirius snarled, reaching for his wand. With a flick and a few well spoken words, the bubble around him disappeared. "Some bloody best mate you are! I get that Snape knows about your condition, but that's no reason to go cursing me like that! In front of the whole bloody world!" Sirius shouted, not caring if anyone heard. He still had his wand firmly in his hand, but honestly felt no want to duel his friend. Sirius was sure he was the most skillfull of the two, but he still didn't want to push it to find out how far their tempers would take them.

Remus knew the Shield Charm was gone; knew it wouldn't trap Sirius for long, just long enough to slow him down. He turned, his face set, and, with a sharp flick of his wand, slammed the dormitory door shut. Then he threw his wand on his bed.
"You want to be mad at me?" he said. "Be mad at me, then. But I swear to Merlin, Sirius, I am not apologizing for what I did. Given the same set of events, I'd do the exact same thing. And if you could keep control of your temper long enough to think through your actions before charging in and acting like a fool, you'd be able to see that for yourself!" He frowned with anger, breathing hard.
He glared at his friend, speaking as frankly and seriously as he had ever dared. "I am done letting you and James walk all over me, Sirius! I am done being so awed by the fact that you want to be friends with me that I'll let you do whatever it comes into your mind to do! We have to be more responsible than that, all of us! And if you won't, I will, and I will fight you every step of the way, and yes! Curse you, if that's what it takes!"
"And don't call me a coward," he said more softly, in a voice a little more like his own. "I just cursed my best friend in front of the entire school. That takes a certain amount of courage. Especially when that friend is you."

Sirius glared hard in Remus' direction but made no move toward him. Sirius should had known Remus would be angry about Sirius openly attacking Snape in the middle of a crowded hallway. It was a bit rash, he thought. Remus was usually all for pulling subtle pranks, but was never okay with dueling. He was never the kind that liked violence.
"We never tried walking all over you," Sirius muttered, sitting down on his bed, putting his wand on his night stand. He shook his head. "Look mate, here is the deal... My brother is going to become a Death Eater the day he turns sixteen. I know that. He's been hanging all over Snape, and I've no doubt in my mind that Snape's a Death Eater. Most of the Slytherin's are...and their going to pull something inside the castle, and innocent people are going to get hurt. And with Evans so blinded by Snape, I'm scared that she's going to get hurt too..."
Everyone knew Sirius and Lily didn't get on well, but everyone also knew that James Potter was in love with Lily...and Sirius would do anything for his best friend, including keeping Lily safe.
"I want to expose Snape for what he is. At least to Lily. I at least want Lily to see with her own two eyes what that guy has become. Maybe then she'll open her eyes to what a good person James is, and hopefully it will keep her away from Snape and out of his sights... So, if I can't do it my way, what do you suggest oh furry one?" Sirius smiled, hoping that his friend would smile too.

Remus gave a slight smile, one that most people might have missed. "One more serious thing before we smile and laugh and put this behind us," he said, sitting, too, facing Sirius. "If they are Death Eaters, and they are, I know it, then that makes it doubly important. This isn't kid stuff anymore, harmless pranks within schoolroom walls. If they've joined with You-Know-Who, they're going to know Dark magic the likes of which you and I have never seen. We're past the stage where we can levitate them from trees and plan something better for after they retaliate. Now, everything we do against them is one more reason for them to try and kill us."
He looked sadly at his friend, then reached over and laid a hand on Sirius' shoulder. "I couldn't bear it if that happened to you, Padfoot. Any of you."
He sighed and ran a hand through his hair, a habit he'd picked up from James. "I know you're worried about your brother, Padfoot, and it speaks well for you. As for Lily . . . I think she knows more about Snape than she lets on," he said, voicing a suspicion he had long kept to himself. "Why do you think she's still trying so hard to defend him?"

Severus sighed and let go of Regulus's arm. It had been a long night... well, a long week, really. The innitiation to the Death Eaters hadn't been easy and now this... when he had been younger Severus had been desperate to get to Hogwarts, to get away from the disaster that was his home life. Now he wished that he could just live in Lucius Malfoy's manor and avoid this ridiculous school altogether.
Just one more year... he reminded himself. It's important for you to put up with this place for one more year.
"You should get to bed," he muttered to Regulus, mind swimming distractedly with thoughts of the Dark Lord and his dark plans. "Classes start early tomorrow."
And he was sure that the days wouldn't be getting any shorter.

"Oh you know how Lily is! She always thinks the best of people. Probably still thinks she can save ole' Snivillus," muttered Sirius, pushing his long floppy hair out of his eyes. "I know this isn't kiddy games anymore Remus. That's why we need to prepare ourselves. Those idiots are going to do something inside Hogwarts, I just know they are. We've got to prepare oursevles to fight whenever they do."
Sirius walked over to Remus and put his hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry mate, nothings gonna happen to any of us. We just have to get past this bloody war business and then we'll all go on with our lives. You'll see."

Remus snorted, more to cover up his real feelings than anything else. "I think we should ask Prongs if Lily always thinks the best of people," he said with a grin, glad that they were past the worst of their argument and a bit surprised that it had been dealt with so easily.
And, oh, how he wanted to believe what Sirius said, that it really could be that simple! Sirius spoke as if the war was a mere inconvenience, and Remus knew he didn't actually feel that way, but that treating it as if it were was a kind of . . . cover. Remus was grateful for it sometimes, but at others, it seemed too much like shutting their eyes to the larger truth.
The worst of it was, he wasn't sure which impulse was winning this time. So he put it all to the back of his mind. He stood, smiled at his friend and said, "Now then, I am going to get back to what I was doing before you interrupted me."

Sirius ruffled Remus' hair and headed for the door to back into the common room. He thought about what he had said to Remus about simply getting past the war business...and he knew he didn't even believe his own words. The war was getting worse every day. People were disappearing, dying, and being run out of their homes every day. Voldemort was becoming much too strong, and Sirius knew that if something didn't happen and quickly, things were going to get out of hand.
Sirius was not naieve enough to think he was not a prime target for a Death Eater. He was a blood traitor, no longer a Black as far as his parents were concerned. He knew that after the end of this year, his days were numbered. It was either fight or die, and he'd fight tooth and nail to survive.
Sirius decided to brush it off for the time being. He would discuss things more in length when all the lads were together, away from prying eyes. He set off to find Prongs and Wormtail and see what they thought could be done about Snape.

"I will... don't worry about things too much, Severus. It won't be good for you," Regulus smirked, playfully smacking Severus' head lightly, then going off into his dorms to sleep, trying to take his own advice and not dwelling upon how his older-- rather, Sirius -- was acting towards the Slytherin house.
How dare he, anyway! Just because a good number of them were Death Eaters, children of Death Eaters, or wishing to be Marked upon their 16th birthday, didn't mean that they were all horrible people. They only wished to join in with the purification of the wizarding world.
I mean, people like Severus were good, even though a half-blood. After all, his friend liked to go by "The Half-Blood Prince," which proved he was worthy of being in the Slytherin house anyway. He had denounced his muggle father, especially considering what that muggle had done to him in the past! Sometimes, he would come to the Black house completely terrified of returning to Spinner's End. It had only gotten worse after Severus had turned 17 and became a Death Eater.
Regulus wished that his friend would be all right, despite all that was happening in the school and the war at the moment.

At long last, his unpacking was done, and Remus headed down to the common room in search of the other Marauders. The place was relatively empty, though as he passed the fireplace, he heard a sniffle.
His heart went out to the unknown person, probably a first year already homesick. He'd dealt with many such students in his time as Prefect, and he changed his course across the room to see if he could help.
"Hello," he said kindly, approaching the hunched figure. "My name's --" He broke off abruptly as the figure turned its head and he saw who it was. "Lily?" he asked, shocked at the sight of this year's Head Girl sitting in front of the fire, tears running down his face. He sat beside her and reached for her hand.
"What's wrong?" he asked.

James snapped out of his reverie. He dimly remembered Sirius starting a fight with Snape, and Remus pushing Sirius back. Then Sirius and Snape were marched off by Professor McGonagall.
After Lily had suddenly started talking normally to him on the train ride to Hogwarts, James' mind had spun off completely. He couldn't believe his luck! He couldn't believe Lily had let him kiss her just as the Hogwarts' Express had piped into Hogsmeade Station. He couldn't believe she had held his hand in the carriage even when Sirius had been taunting both of them about it, and Peter had been green with disapproval.
He went out to find Peter to talk things over. He had a funny feeling in his guts that his friend wouldn't be satisfied with the state of things now, and that they needed to talk it over. He knew that Lily was in the common room crying over Severus. James wasn't even jealous all that much. She had told him how Snape had been her best friend for the most part of school, how he had told her about being a witch, and about the magic world. It must be hard to find out he had now completely given himself to this Voldemort. And even though many people wouldn't have expected a student to be part of that group called Death Eaters, James was pretty sure Severus had joined them. His disability to look Lily in the eyes (wonderfully sparkling green as they were) had told him tales. That's why, for the first time in his life, he had been more than reluctant to join in the teasing with Sirius.
