Sirius narrowed his eyes at Peter. It was quite rare for the little mouse of a boy to peep up when something annoyed him, and apparently his unintented intrusion into their conversation had done just that.
"Why Wormy, old chum, I simply want to speak to James about taking a...subtle approach, to prove to our dear mutual friend Lily Evans that Snape is indeed a Death Eater. She needs to be informed, for her own safety of course. You don't have anything against Lily, now do you Wormy?"
That was it. Sirius had dared Peter to tell James exactly how he felt about Lily and why. It was his unnatural jealousy toward her that fueled his hatred for her, and Sirius knew it. Lets see Peter worm his way out of this, Sirius thought.

Peter swallowed slightly. He didn't want to admit to James that he didn't like Lily, but then he realised this might be his chance to make James not like her. The muggleborn had always been friends with Snape, so perhaps he could use that to his advantage....
"I do have something against Lily actually," Peter said somewhat timidly. His thoughts might be conniving and sly, but he himself was very timid and cowardly. "She's friends with Snape." He looked at James and Sirius innocently, a facade to hide his ugly intentions. "I don't know why you have never questioned her; after all, we are all ready to believe that Snape is a Death Eater, and she is his friend..."

Sirius and James looked at one another for a brief second and then both burst into a fit of laughter.
"You suggest Evans is a Death Eater? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard!" Sirius held his sides. He found the idea hilarious. "Not only is Lily Evans the single most goody straight and narrow girl that I knnow, she's also muggle born you half wit! They'd just soon kill her as look at her!"

Peter shifted uncomfortably, his neck and face heating up with an ugly, blotchy pink. "Well, I still don't think she is as innocent as she claims to be. She's friends with Snape, and if it is so obvious for us to see that he's a Death Eater, than she must too. Yet she's still friends with him" His voice was getting stronger, and it was almost as if he was beginning to believe the very rubbish he was spouting. He was so pathetic that he was ready to delude himself into thinking his lies were correct, just to prove that Lily didn't deserve James.
"Condoning his behaviour is just as bad as supporting it."

"You fool!" Sirius spat, the reason for his sudden anger even unknown to him. "Lily Evans is as much a Death Eater as Dumbledore is!" Sirius met Peter's eyes and there he saw what a true coward he was. Weak with jealousy, he was doing his best to make sure that James did not end up with Lily. "You're a jealous little worm," Sirius seethed.

Peter glared at Sirius, a dark look creeping into his eyes. How he would love to curse him right now...how he would love to see that egotistical boy put in his place.
The dark look vanished though, as Sirius's words sunk in, the hurt and humilation closing in around him. Without warning, Peter turned into a rat and scampered off down the hallway into a crack in the wall, leaving his two "friends" behind.
He moved through the dark hole, seething inwardly at Sirius. There was no way he could have stood up to him, and to make things worse, James had not said anything in his defence.
He came out of the crack on the other side and, giving a quick glance to make sure no one was around, turned back into his original form. Moving through the dark corridors, Peter wondered what he could do. He was so humiliated, and yet, his anger would not leave him. He wanted to get back at Sirius and James, and all of them for pushing him away. None of them cared about him. They all cared about themselves.
"I'll get them back." Peter muttered darkly to himself, and stalked off down the hallway, a new glint in his eyes which would have chilled even the most hardened person. He was filled with such rage, such hate, and such humiliation that he was ready to do anything to make them feel the same. He wanted to see them in pain. He wanted to feel on top. But how to to do it?

"What are you doing down here, Pettigrew? And without your guard, I see? Very brave." the voice was soft, a dangerous quality lurking just beneath the surface. Severus stood against the wall, although it was hard to make out his figure in the darkness that surrounded them. He was smirking though, a single eyebrow raised, wand in hand.

Peter jumped, his expression changing from malicious to frightened in a split-second. He turned his face apprehensively, feeling his heart pumping as he realised whose voice that was. Snape, the boy who his friends had always teased, though Peter himself had only watched with eager glee in seeing someone besides himself suffering.
"W-what do you want?" Peter asked in what was meant to be a forceful voice, but only came out squeaky like the little rat he was.

Severus smirked, speaking a soft spell. A light from the tip of his wand suddenly illuminated enough area so that they could see each other. Onyx eyes were glittering with something as he stepped around Peter, circling him like he was a caged animal. Which, to be truthfully honest, he was.
"Has Potter finally made you someone elses charity case, Pettigrew?"

Peter's fists clenched, his eyes once more taking on the dark expression. The truth was always hard to hear, and what Severus was saying was the truth.
"I...." he wanted to tell Snape he was wrong, but hadn't James just let Sirius say all those horrible things to him.
"Shutup!" Peter snapped, finally losing some of the squeaky quality in his voice. "You don't know anything."

Severus smirked, his voice silkly as he stopped in front of the boy. "Ah, it seems that I have struck a nerve."
He raised a single eyebrow, holding his wand at the ready. He had learned to never under estimate any enemy.

Peter glared at the greasy-haired boy, his teeth bared in his frustration. All sense of self-preservation was slipping away with his fury.
"Yeah, well at least I don't rely on some stupid muggleborn for my only friend; not that she cares about you anyway. She's too infaturated with James." Peter ended bitterly, remembering the whole reason why he was alone right now. It was all Lily's fault.

Severus tensed, every muscle in his body taunt. His words escaped him, dangerously low, dripping with venom.
"That mudblood is not my friend, Pettigrew. Nor, it seems, are they yours. I have no interest in who she wishes to shower with her affections. Even if that person is as loathsome as Potter."

Peter almost laughed, and he would have if Snape had not been looking particularly muderous right now. It dawned on him that he was standing very much alone, in a secluded part of the castle, with a boy who was surrounded by suspicions of being a Death Eater. For someone as weak, and useless at defending himself as Peter, this was surely a very dangerous position to be in, and pushing Snape with more taunts was not in his best interest. However, Peter always was rather slow, and it seemed he was about to dig himself even further in trouble.
"That mudblood, as you put it, is the reason all of this has happened. Perhaps you should have kept a better leash on her; I'm sure you would still be calling her 'friend' if she had not gone after James."

In a single stride, Severus was standing just inches away from the other boy's face, wand pressing into his throat as he almost spat in his face. He was no longer mad, but angry.
"Evans is the exact opposite of what I believe in, Pettigrew. She can do whatever she wishes, for I have ceased to care. She remains in the company of cowards and fools, an idiot to what is going on in the real world. Do you want to see the real world, Peter?"
Severus all but spat out his name like it was the most foul word in the world. Without much thought, his anger taking over his usually calm control and shattering it, he raised the sleeve of his robes, revealing the Dark Mark that was tattooed onto his skin.
"This is the real world, Pettigrew. No one will be able to escape the Dark Lord, not even those that hide within the halls of this ridiculous castle. They are all blissfully unaware of the on coming danger to their lives. They would rather spend their time playing Quidditch or messing around with the opposite sex in the hallway. And they will all die for their stupidity."
